Blind Cat’s Miraculous Escape: How a 20-Year-Old Feline Was Saved From an Icy Lake Just in Time

A blind, 20-year-old cat named Tiki was rescued from the freezing waters of Nabnasset Lake thanks to the heroic efforts of two good Samaritans and the Westford Police Department.

The dramatic rescue unfolded early in the morning when a passerby called the police after spotting a cat floating precariously on a piece of ice, about 30-40 feet from shore near Fletcher Lane. As officers raced to the scene, the ice beneath the stranded feline began to crack, leaving only Tiki’s head visible above the frigid water.

Before the police could arrive, two quick-thinking Good Samaritans, Kris and Nate, who were working from home, sprang into action. Using a rowboat and a shovel, Nate navigated through the breaking ice, guided by Kris from the shore.

With moments to spare, Nate managed to pull the shivering cat from the water and bring him to safety.

This morning the Westford Police Department received a panicked call from a passerby who stated that there was a cat…

When animal control officers arrived, Tiki was in dire condition—lethargic, in shock, and with a body temperature so low it didn’t register on the thermometer. They rushed him to a veterinary clinic, where his resilience amazed everyone.

Later that day, Tiki’s worried owners contacted animal control after recognizing their beloved cat in the rescue post.

“This afternoon a resident from Birch Rd reached out stating they thought this may be their cat Tiki who had gotten out last night or early this morning,” Westford Animal Control shared on social media. “They were able to positively identify him and then informed us that Tiki is not only 20 YEARS OLD but is also BLIND!”

They believe Tiki had accidentally escaped the night before, likely pursued by a predator that drove him onto the ice.

Against all odds, Tiki is now recovering warmly at home with his relieved family.

This heartwarming rescue would not have been possible without the compassion of Dawn F., who first called for help, and the selfless bravery of Kris and Nate. The Westford Police Department and Westford Animal Control also played a crucial role in ensuring Tiki received the urgent care he needed.

Tiki’s miraculous survival is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary kindness of people who go above and beyond to save lives—even those with paws and whiskers.
